Second Wave Update: William & Pamela Davis Family Community Plaza Takes Shape

Published April 21, 2025

The newest cornerstone of our Second Wave expansion is nearly ready to welcome visitors. Crews have poured the final stretch of concrete and begun planting the first wave of greenery in the William and Pamela Davis Family Community Plaza, transforming bare ground into a vibrant gathering place at the museum’s riverfront campus.

Concrete poured in the new William and Pamela Davis Family Community Plaza.

When finished, the plaza will serve as the grand doorstep to the Larry and Karen Bettcher Wing — home to the Great Lakes Community Education Center and our brand‑new exhibit halls. Over the coming weeks, teams will install decorative lighting and signage while providing a comfortable outdoor experience for guests.

More than an entrance

  • Gateway to learning: The plaza’s pathway leads directly into our pre-event space and Great Lakes Community Education Center where lifelong learners will explore Great Lakes programming and events.

  • Community‑focused design: Landscape beds highlight native plants that support pollinators.

  • Room to celebrate: With power access, flexible furniture and amazing views, the space is ideal for receptions, reunions, corporate mixers and after‑hours programs.

Stay tuned as we add the final touches and count down to our official grand opening on Saturday, June 28. The plaza is another step toward making the National Museum of the Great Lakes the region’s gathering place for Great Lakes conversations — now both inside and out.
