THE SOCIETY AT A GLANCE
The National Museum of the Great Lakes has launched a new Membership Category “The Admiral Society” meant to engage a higher level of interaction between the museum and leadership-level supporters. The Admiral Society invites individuals to join the National Museum of the Great Lakes as members at an annual support level of $5,000 (Admiral), $2,500 (Vice Admiral), or $6,000 (Corporate).
The Admiral Society members play an active role in shaping portions of the museum’s curation and programming. Part of each member’s annual contribution will fund “future-building” maritime history projects (artifact acquisition, exhibition creation, educational outreach opportunities, etc.) as determined by The Admiral Society members.
To achieve our mission, The Admiral Society’s annual activities during our initial years are divided into 2 seasons: 1.) Recruitment & Education (July – to December) and 2.) Selection & Experience (January – June). Membership renewal for all members of The Admiral Society takes place in July.
**Membership for our inaugural year of The Admiral Society closes on December 31st and will not reopen again until July 1, 2024. Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in our new, future-building society from its inception!**
The Admiral Society | Happenings
Thank you to all who were able to join us from the beginning for a glimpse into this exclusive new membership during our Launch Reception for The Admiral Society on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Following that introduction, we also enjoyed taking a walk through submarine history on the Great Lakes along with a meet and greet with various submarine crew veterans during our first “Past to Present” event on August 18, 2023. Then, on September 23, The Admiral Society members gathered for our H2Oh! Gala VIP reception where we acknowledged our distinguished guests, The Hunger Family, and their extraordinary commitment to the Great Lakes and its history. Most recently, on November 10, NMGL Executive Director Chris Gillcrist served as the personal tour guide during The Fitzgerald Experience Private Tour aboard the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship —providing a captivating tour drawing eerie parallels to the Edmund Fitzgerald‘s tragic fate.

On December 5 we will host our last open event before we enter our members-only Selection & Experience Season beginning in 2024. The Admiral Society members and invited guests are invited to join a virtual Archaeology Q&A Session with NMGL’s Archaeological and Research Director Carrie Sowden to discuss her summer fieldwork around the Tuskegee Airmen and Northern Lights wrecks. ~
OUR MISSION
To guide and shape the past, present, and future of the National Museum of the Great Lakes by focusing on three core aspects: experience, education, and achievement.
Gather with like-minded individuals for opportunities to experience and connect with maritime history while shaping the Museum’s future for generations to come.
Take a deeper dive into your understanding of maritime history, while also bringing more Great Lakes history education to the community and the world.
Leave a Great Lakes history legacy through the establishment of once-in-a-lifetime, future-building maritime projects.
