National Museum of the Great Lakes Invites Community to Join in Annual “Christmas Tree Ship” Giveback Event

This holiday season, the National Museum of the Great Lakes invites the public to participate in our annual Christmas Tree Ship Community Giveback event, presented by UToledo Health and supported by the Port of Monroe. The event is inspired by the legacy of Captain Herman E. Schuenemann and the schooner Rouse Simmons, known as the “Christmas Tree Ship.” The boat tragically sank on November 23, 1912, while carrying Christmas trees destined for families in need. Captain Schuenemann, remembered as “Captain Santa,” symbolizes the spirit of holiday giving that the museum proudly carries forward.

Join us on Saturday, December 7 for a full day of fun and free museum admission. Watch the East Toledo Holiday Parade, beginning at 11 am, and head over to the museum for the arrival of Santa on a Geo. Gradel Co. tugboat with a delivery of live Christmas trees at 1:30 pm. Families can purchase a 5-7 foot Christmas tree for themselves or those in need for $65, with pre-orders closing on December 1. All trees will arrive on the boat that day! “This event is an incredible opportunity for us to connect with our community and honor the legacy of Captain Schuenemann and the Rouse Simmons,” said Ellen Kennedy, Director of Museum Operations. “It’s a wonderful way to bring people together and celebrate the season while giving back.”

In addition to purchasing a tree, the community can contribute monetary donations to support holiday needs. All donations will be matched by UToledo Health with a healthy hygiene kit and distributed to our underserved community members through United Way of Greater Toledo, East Toledo Family Center, Family House, Lucas County Children Services, and Sylvania Area Family Services.
