Demolition and Preparation Begin for Second Wave Structure Build
Published: August 27, 2024
Nearly three months into the project, we have exciting new updates on our Second Wave Expansion. As we move forward with our plans to enhance and expand our offerings, we are currently in the demolition phase to make way for the new 5,000 addition. This phase marks a significant step toward realizing our vision for a more immersive and comprehensive visitor experience.
Preparing the St. Mary’s Challenger Pilothouse
One of the key elements of this expansion is the integration of the historic St. Mary’s Challenger Pilothouse. Before the primary structure begins to take shape, our team is focused on cleaning out and preparing the Pilothouse to ensure it’s ready to be incorporated into the new space. This iconic piece of maritime history will serve as a centerpiece in our expansion, providing visitors with an accessible, up-close look at the life and work aboard one of the Great Lakes’ most storied vessels all year long.

Demolition of the Back Bathrooms and Former Office Space
In addition to preparing the Pilothouse, we have also completed the demolition of the back bathrooms and the prior office space. This area is set to become part of a new 5,000-square-foot structure that will house expanded exhibits, interactive displays, and a dedicated Great Lakes Education Center. The demolition marks a crucial step in creating a space that reflects the dynamic and evolving history of the Great Lakes.
