Spring Lecture Series: Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield

March 8 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

2023 Spring Lecture Banner #3

Join us for the first presentation of our 2023 Spring Lecture Series. Offered as a hybrid event, participants can choose when registering to take part in a live-streamed watch party in-person at the museum or online via Zoom with an option to purchase his book: Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield, RN: Master Chartmaker of the Great Lakes and St Lawrence for either participation preference.

ABOUT THE LECTURE:

From Lakehead to Labrador, Admiralty Surveyor Henry Wolsey Bayfield (1795-1885) spent forty years of his life mapping Canada’s vast coasts and inland waterways. A heroic Napoleonic era naval hero, explorer, naturalist, and polymath, Bayfield, was one of the most extraordinary individuals of the nineteenth century. His navigational charts saved countless lives and vessels and literally mapped the way for settlement into the interior of the continent.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

David Yates is an award-winning author and semi-retired teacher with the Avon-Maitland DSB. He taught history in Huron County highschools and served 17 years on the Goderich town council. Since 2007, his local history column has appeared regularly in Huron County papers and he has written several books on Huron County History. Among his many awards is the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for his historical writings. David and his wife, Kathryn, live in Goderich where they raised their 3 children.
