Port of Toledo Walking Tour

April 3, 2024 - April 3, 2025

Travel back in the past to explore the story behind the Port of Toledo—the National Museum of the Great Lakes’ hometown. Join Tedd Long, writer and curator of holytoledohistory.com, on a walking tour along the heart of downtown Toledo’s riverfront while sightseeing, boat watching and enjoying the winding path along the Maumee.

This fascinating tour explores maritime history from Middlegrounds Metropark to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge and back. By the end of the 90-minute tour, you’ll have a whole new perspective on Toledo, the Maumee River, and the largest landmass port on the Great Lakes including:

  • Why Toledo’s Warehouse District was centered on Swan Creek, how the canals helped to transform the Glass City, and how a change in wind direction saved downtown Toledo in 1894.
  • How a very innovative stream running through Middlegrounds Metropark is helping to keep the Maumee River fresh and clean.
  • How tug boats and commercial fishing played a vital role in the Port’s development.

Plus, take in stories along the Toledo Trail like the crash of the Yuma into the Cherry Street Bridge and the building of the David Dows—the world’s first 5-masted sailing vessel.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: The Port of Toledo Walking Tour is $5.99. Through the generous donation of author Tedd Long, all proceeds support the National Museum of the Great Lakes and its mission, to preserve and make known the history of the Great Lakes.
