View the Temporary Exhibit: August 30 through October 21, 2022
The National Museum of the Great Lakes is pleased to be partnering with Owens Community College (OCC) on a temporary exhibit display featuring Great Lakes Maritime Art. Open from August 30 through October 21, the exhibit is located on the Owens Community College campus within the Walter E. Terhune Gallery in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
Naval painting and art is a form that goes back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians and beyond. Art on the Great Lakes emerged with the economic boom of the Industrial Revolution. Artists in the late 19th century often worked directly for ship yards or shipping companies, illustrating their vessels for company offices and owners’ mantles. The earliest artists worked from life, sometimes setting up their easel on the banks of the body of water that they were painting. As shipping moved into the 20th century, art changed slightly. However, after the 1950s, many Great Lakes artists went back to a realistic form, which is still prevalent today.
Join us as we explore some of the best of our over 250 pieces of two-dimensional art within the National Museum of the Great Lakes collection which, covers a wide variety of mediums, topics, and skill sets.

- The Gallery is open FREE to the public on Monday & Wednesday: 11:30 am–7:30 pm, Tuesday & Thursday: 8:30 am–5 pm.

ACCENT ON ARTS! SERIES: Thursday, October 6, 7:30 PM
The 7th Annual Accent on the Arts! Series featuring Russ Franzen is a free concert series designed, booked, promoted and presented by Music Business Technology students. Russ is an acoustic storyteller sharing original songs about lighthouses, lake boats, shipwrecks, canals and life along the Great Lakes. Admission is free. About the Walter E. Terhune Gallery
The 1,300-square-foot Gallery is part of Ownes Community College’s Center for Fine and Performing Arts. It is committed to exhibiting diverse, vibrant visual arts created by faculty, students, and community members, and to embedding arts programming within the curriculum. Exhibits at the Gallery — both in the main exhibit space and along the outside wall — have spanned a wide range of media and styles, from traditional art to interactive, multi-media installations.
The Gallery is named on behalf of Walter E. Terhune, following a donation in 2003 to the Owens Community College Foundation from KeyBank’s Terhune Memorial Fund. Established in 1926, the Walter E. Terhune Memorial Fund was created by Mr. Terhune’s daughter, Alice Crosby Terhune, to honor her father who was a longtime Toledo businessman and philanthropist. Mr. Terhune was an owner and officer of Clark and Terhune Lumber Merchants, a successful lumber company in the 1800s.
