Get your tall ship fix this summer, without ever leaving Toledo. The National Museum of the Great Lakes is thrilled to welcome BaySail and the tall ship Appledore IV to Toledo for a special series of programs on the Maumee River this August.
Family Ecology Sail:
Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles! Are you and your kids interested in learning more about the ecosystems in which we all live, work and play? Do you know which watershed you live in? Have you ever wondered what exactly a watershed is?
There’s no better place to answer these question than from the deck of a tall ship! Join us on the Appledore IV for a fun day of learning the science of our land and waterways. The Family Ecology Sail is fun and educational for everyone onboard.
Learn the different factors of weather, point and nonpoint source pollution, basic knots and navigation techniques, and observe native species in the habitats.
Participate in hands-on activities, like collecting lake/river samples and helping the crew raise and set the sails.
Analyze water samples by testing for pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and nitrate levels. You’ll even get the chance to observe live plankton beneath a microscope!
The Important Details:
Children under 6 years old are required, by law, to wear a lifejacket at all times while onboard the ship. Participants must provide their own lifejacket for children under 6 years old. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Boarding begins 30 minutes before your sail on the dock behind the museum. The ship will leave the dock promptly at 11am. The sail will take approximately 3.5 hours. We are not providing food or beverages, but you are welcome to bring your favorite snacks and beverages. No glass bottles or large, bulky coolers. Anything that you carry onto the ship, you need to carry off.
All sails are rain or shine. Dress for the weather and wear non-slip, closed toe shoes. The ship’s captain retains the sole right to determine whether or not a sail will proceed as scheduled. In the unlikely event that the ship does not depart due to unfavorable weather conditions or other factors, tickets will be refunded. If a make-up date becomes available, ticket holders will get the first right of refusal.
