Capt. Scupper’s Kids Club: Be a Shipwreck Explorer – Basic Level

June 9 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

- FREE
Join us to explore Great Lakes shipwrecks with our friends at the Wisconsin Historical Society.

We’re working with the Wisconsin Historical Society to help test their newest online program to teach kids about shipwrecks. You can be one of the first people to explore their new program and give feedback. Register for this free virtual program at eventbrite.com.

About the program:

This is an informal, online, educational program about shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. The program is in the beta testing phase and, therefore, will be facilitated by a maritime archaeologist from the Wisconsin Historical Society. This format allows for the collection of feedback and gives the kids an opportunity to ask questions as they complete the activities.

There are 2 variations of the program, the basic level written for a 3rd/4th grade reading level and the intermediate level written for a 5th/6th grade reading level. This session is for the basic level. The program takes approximately one hour to complete and includes 6 activities:

1) Artifact Match-the kids read a story about a shipwreck and then use context clues and observation skills to decide which artifacts match that shipwreck site.

2) Dress the Diver-a virtual “paper doll” allows the kids to assemble the gear that divers wear and to learn a little more about each piece of the equipment.

3) Find Your Route-the kids read through the different stops on a shipping route and draw it on a map of the Great Lakes. Then they discuss how close their route was to the actual route taken by the ship and learn more about the cargo it carried.

4) Ship Vocabulary-the kids learn basic nautical vocabulary and match the words to what they describe on a photo mosaic of a shipwreck.

5) Puzzles-the kids assemble puzzles to learn about the different types of ships used on the Great Lakes.

6) Word Scramble (basic) or Cryptogram (intermediate)-the kids solve word puzzles to learn about different causes of shipwrecks on the Great Lakes.

Gaining feedback about the program is the goal of this testing phase. You will be asked to fill out a short survey at the completion of the program to help make this program better!
